There was nothing quite like the thrill of sledding in front of our house during those snowy Christmases when the world seemed so much bigger. The steep hill in the front yard, blanketed in fresh snow, sparkled under the glow of twinkling lights strung along the roof. My breath puffed out in clouds as I perched at the top, bundled in scarves and mittens, the cold nipping at my cheeks. With a push, I flew down, the sled carving crisp lines in the snow, laughter mixing with the winter wind. At the base of the hill, I’d tumble into the soft drift, the faint warmth of the house lights calling me back for another run, while a lone bird nested high in the window, watching over our joyful play.

That bird became a part of the scene, nestled year after year in the cranny by the top window, as if it, too, had made our house its home for the holidays. I remember looking up at it, a black silhouette against the dimming winter sky, as my sled slid to a stop. Its tiny presence made the world feel safe, as though nothing could ever change. The lights on the Christmas tree flickered through the front window, while inside, the scent of pine and cinnamon filled the air, promising warmth after the last tumble through the snow. Those evenings felt endless, as though the magic of Christmas lived in every frozen moment.
