This lantern-style clock is a traditional early English design. The silver chapter ring and brass case is all hand engraved with incredible detail. The intricate serpentine hands are brass, as are the columns and giant brass bell on top.
The Lantern clocks of the 16th Century all had this basic shape of a brass clock with a large bell on top. They may have been called Lantern clocks because of the shape (resembling a lantern) or because brass and similar alloys were called “Latten.” Most likely this clock style was developed in the Low Countries originally and the same clockmakers may have settled in London.
The clock strikes the hour on a large, deep-ringing bell.
This painted version is a one-of-a-kind model. There are about five painted clocks available, each with a different flower. These are extremely collectible and are each painted individually by an artist in Holland. Be sure to look at all of the painted clocks pictured here and choose your favorite. It may or may not be still available. Contact us today for more information. These clocks are no longer being produced.
The Cromwell is by Christaan Huygens.
